They arrived early in weathered vans and pickups, their 40-gallon plastic water tanks sloshing as they pulled to a stop along debris-strewn Belrose Street.

A dozen homemade mobile units in all, they collectively created the valley’s longest car wash on this homely slash of asphalt that angles past a payday loan store and pawn shop and reaches right to the front door of a state Welfare Division office.

On a street traveled by so many people seeking state assistance, here is an example of the indefatigable entrepreneurial spirit Americans like to brag about.

I didn’t take a poll or request identification, but I bet not many of the mobile washers were American citizens or even legal immigrants. Most spoke only Spanish.

One who spoke English said a great deal in a single sentence, “Everyone needs to work.”

By 9:30 a.m., half the outfits were busy. In addition to the water tank, each unit had a small generator, power sprayer, canister vacuum, and enough cloths and spray cleaner to make a car lot sparkle. The outlay runs about $1,000, I was told, but when the economy was booming, a mobile wash, wax, and detailing might run $30 or $40 per car.

In good times, many of the washers had long client lists. They made house calls for local doctors, lawyers, and insurance brokers who wanted a custom detailing job. They had business licenses.

As the economy worsened, many clients dropped away. That leaves the mobile washers spending much of the day on Belrose, which runs in front of a converted Kmart that’s now an indoor swap meet called the Rancho Discount Mall.

Depending, literally, on what the Belrose traffic will bare, they charge as little as $10 for a meticulous wash and hand-rubbed finish. Beyond the excellent quality of the work, I wondered what brought people down to this neighborhood that has seen better decades. : The almost spectacular set of numbers turned in by Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) for the December 2009 quarter proves that a lot of common sense combined with a little luck can go a long way in turning around a company’s fortunes. What seemed improbable even three or four months back is now a reality thanks to some cost-cutting initiatives and some new launches. After reporting a loss in the September 2009 quarter, JLR’s profit after tax (PAT) for the three months to December 2009, came in at 55 million pounds which was nearly three times analysts’ estimates.
Demand hasn’t recovered in the UK but Christmas sales were brisk in some other European markets as also the US. That apart, both the Jaguar and the Land Rover sold exceedingly well in China; the increase over the September quarter was 200% and 60% respectively, albeit on a much smaller base. With all this, volumes rose 28% over the September 2009 quarter.
And with JLR able to cut back on incentives, the average selling price was higher by about 8% translating into an increase in the net sales of 23.4%. The top line growth was enough to bring down the ratio of raw material to sales by 130 basis points sequentially and push up the ebitda (earnings before interest, tax and depreciation) margin by nearly 700 basis points to 9.8%. That has sent analysts back to their spreadsheets and the good news is that Tata Motors’ consolidated net debt-equity ratio will come off to a very reasonable 1.32 times by 2011-12.
Of course, JLR needs to continue the good work to drive up sales. But the management deserves credit for doing well in 2009 which was undoubtedly a bad year after the global financial crisis of 2008. True, much of Europe is yet to bounce back but despite this JLR’s revenues in the December 2009 quarter were nearly two billion cheap domestic flights from Melbourne (Tullamarine) to Whitsunday Coast pounds. A taxi driver was killed in a crash on Highway 427 in northwest Toronto early Sunday morning.

The driver had stopped his car — which was experiencing mechanical problems — on the southbound lane of the highway near the Eglinton Avenue W. exit at around 3:45 a.m., said the Ontario Provincial Police.

He was standing outside the taxi when it was hit from behind by a sport utility vehicle.

The taxi driver was also hit and died at the scene. Police have not released any further details, including the identity of the killed driver.

Drivers are often encouraged to stay in their vehicles in the event of a breakdown on the highway. But OPP Const. Graham Williamson said it’s not that simple.

“It’s a difficult thing. You can’t really give general information … because every situation has its own individual conditions and merits,” he told CBC News. “In a case like this, perhaps it may have been more prudent to leave the vehicle, I don’t know. And in other situations, it may have been more prudent to stay in the vehicle.”

Two southbound lanes on Highway 427 and the exits at Eglinton Avenue were closed for several flights from Sydney to Whitsunday Coast hours Sunday morning as police investigated, but have since reopened.

Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler are getting serious about small cars again – an eerie echo of 1960 when the companies introduced three new models.

At that time, folksy American auto writer Tom McCahill, in Modern Mechanix magazine, predicted “the wildest alley cat fight since Finnegan needled the bear” as Detroit’s Big Three took on each other and import brands with their first serious attempts at all-American small cars: the “compact” Chevrolet Corvair, Plymouth Valiant and Ford Falcon.

The result of this less than wholeheartedly endorsed effort by car makers happily pumping out oversized, chrome-laden showboats in the 1950s was as unpredictable as the turn of a card for an industry Pontiac chieftain Bunkie Knudson described as “the world’s biggest poker game.” We can expect no difference this time around.

McCahill may have sounded home-spun but he had a handle on American automotive tastes that was prescient.

He felt the reception the new compacts received would “serve as a barometer for American automotive thinking for many years to come.” And if they proved more successful than anticipated, they would soon be joined by more small cars. As it turned out, the new compacts proved a more than worthwhile undertaking, and more models did follow, but it was McCahill’s own opinion that better mirrored mainstream American automotive taste and set the tone for the next three decades.

“Personally I go along with the thinking that America is basically a big-car country with big-car needs. I feel that unless we have a depression of major size or 60 cents a gallon gasoline, the so-called big cars will still grab off 80 per cent of the market,” McCahill wrote.
